As we celebrate this holiday season, I've been reflecting on what I truly wish for nurses and our profession. The beautiful Amy Grant song "My Grown Up Christmas List" speaks of dreams like "no more lives torn apart" and "time would heal all hearts." It made me wonder - what would a grown-up Christmas list for nurses include?

Here's what my heart wishes for our profession this Christmas season:

For Our Nursing Students:

  • Training in emotional intelligence that helps them build and contribute to positive nursing culture

  • Understanding that self-care isn't just a buzzword, but a vital daily practice

  • Preparation for the real demands of the profession, so they enter the workforce ready and confident

  • Skills to recognize when and how to ask for help, backed by practical experience

  • Knowledge of all available resources they can tap into as they begin their careers

For Our New Graduate Nurses:

  • Recognition and treatment as the precious resources they are

  • Continuous mentorship throughout their early career journey

  • Protected time for breaks away from their units during every shift

  • Ready access to support systems that help them build lasting careers

For Our Nursing Leaders:

  • Comprehensive leadership development that goes beyond clinical expertise

  • Training in emotional intelligence to better support their teams

  • Guidance on making the crucial transition from team member to leader

  • Resources that support sustainable leadership practices

  • A redefined role that doesn't demand 24/7 availability from a single person

For Our Nurse Innovators and Entrepreneurs:

  • Recognition as valuable contributors to healthcare's future

  • Appreciation as solution-creators rather than competition to the traditional healthcare model

  • Support for their creative vision in advancing nursing practice

This list reflects my wishes for our profession, but it's just the beginning. I believe it will take all of us to complete this Christmas list for nurses. What would you add to it? What gifts would you wish for our nursing community?
